The Enchanting Elwha River
Join us as we discover the intriguing story that is unfolding as the Elwha River is restored. In September 2011, the first concrete pieces were removed from two dams on the Elwha River as part of the largest dam removal and the second largest watershed restoration project in US history. This January, you can earn clock hours and meet fellow teachers as our experienced field science educators guide you on your Elwha exploration.
You’ll test water characteristics (such as pH and dissolved oxygen levels), observe the geomorphology of the riparian zones and learn about the wildlife and people who live in the Elwha watershed. This is a great opportunity to learn more about this momentous time in our state’s history and how you can bring inquiry-based science back to your classroom to connect students with the Elwha and their local watersheds.
Our professional educators relate what students are learning in Olympic National Park back to the urban, suburban, and rural places from which they come. This understanding is critical for participants to comprehend their own place and role in the environment on a local, regional, and global scale.
